“My past has not defined me, destroyed me, deterred me, or defeated me: it has only strengthened me” Steve Maroboli.

The symptoms of trauma can occur in response to a severely distressing event or series of events. Trauma can be experienced to varying degrees. However,  the more serious it is, such as it being a life threatening event, the more difficult it is for you to process and integrate the event.

Immediately after the event, you may feel experience shock, denial and feeling overwhelmed which are typical symptoms. After that, longer term reactions may include excessive alertness, being easily startled and fatigue. Most importantly, with the right support, you can come to terms with what you may be experiencing.

Some symptoms of trauma most often appear shortly after the event. However you may notice symptoms which have laid dormant and appear years later.

Psychologists at Happy Minds Psychology have undergone specialist training to support you through your trauma counselling. We have experience in working with clients who have experienced a wide variety of traumatic situations, including:

  • Birth Trauma
  • Sexual assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Emergency service personnel such as fire personnel, police, veterans and paramedics
  • Suicide of a loved one
  • Natural disasters
  • Terrorism
